Higman internships are designed to be robust experiences intended to develop career skills in the fields of museums, education, public programs, archaeology, fundraising, public relations and other aspects of our organization’s mission. 

Library & Archives Intern

Reports to 

Director of Presidio Research Center


This internship will work directly with the Presidio Research Center’s Director to organize, describe and create digital records for materials oral history, digital and manuscript collections related to Santa Barbara local histories and communities. The Presidio Research Center contains multiple oral history collections that are in the process of being digitized, transcribed, and described for general access. This internship will introduce the successful applicant to working in a local research library and designing digital exhibits.

Scope of Duties 

Under the supervision of the Presidio Research Center Director, the intern duties may include:

• Reviewing, correcting, and annotating oral history transcripts

• Creating descriptive metadata records for oral histories and accompanying materials

• Evaluating physical and digital materials for preservation and privacy issues

• Identifying major concepts, themes and sites across oral history collections

• Research and annotate resources related to local and community history in Santa Barbara

This internship is ideal for someone with a strong interest in one or more of the following areas:

• Digital archives and humanities

• Local and public history

• Library, archives or museum studies



• Upper division undergraduate student or graduate student standing

• Experience and/or demonstrated interest in library, archives, history, museum studies, and/or public history

• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

• Excellent writing and communication skills

• Ability to work well with a diverse group of people

• Ability to work independently

• Experience working with Microsoft Office and familiarity with databases
