The "Fremont Map" of Oregon and Upper California is a treasure of the collections at the Santa Bárbara Mission Archive-Library. The original drawing for this lithograph was completed by topographer Charles Preuss while on expedition with John C. Fremont. Regions claimed and populated by indigenous people groups are labeled on the map in print. Ink and pencil markings were added later, including the following note: “This very map was used by the [California] Convention of 1849 from Alex S. Taylor.” The map illustrates the area known today as the western half of the United States.
