Junípero Serra in Mexico exhibit extended through June!

SBTHP is pleased to announce that this beautiful exhibit of photography by Jeffrey Becom and drawings by Richard Perry, which was curated by Dr. Julianne Burton-Carvajal, has been extended for an additional two months, through June 30th.

We have enjoyed hosting the exhibit at Casa de la Guerra, and appreciate all the hard work of the exhibit team to support the show during its run in Santa Barbara.  On First Thursday, March 7th, we celebrated the exhibit opening on a windy, drizzly evening.  The weather didn’t deter the crowd, however, and we welcomed over 100 people to the museum that evening.  Many of the attendees posed thoughtful questions to Jeff Becom about travel in the Sierra Gorda region and his photography equipment and techniques.  Others approached Richard Perry, inquiring about the iconography on the churches and the unique history of the Queretero Missions.

On Thursday April 4th, the local Santa Barbara Corral of Westerners International hosted the exhibit team for their monthly dinner and meeting at the Santa Barbara Club.  After a lovely meal, the team gave a collaborative, illustrated talk about the exhibit, with travel tips and recommendations to the many members in the audience interested in this remote area of Mexico.   Many Westerners members lingered long after the talk to learn more about the Sierra Gorda missions from the exhibit team.  We are especially grateful to Sheriff of the Santa Barbara Corral, William MacKinnon, for coordinating the event.

With all this positive attention for the show, SBTHP believes that the extension is certainly warranted!  We thank curator Julianne Burton-Carvajal for her generosity in helping SBTHP continue to host the exhibit through June 30th.  If you have not stopped by to see it yet, please do! Casa de la Guerra is open from noon-4:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
