A Soldier of California, 1791: wearing his cuera blanca (white leather jacket) after a sketch made by Jose Cardero in the Museo Naval, Madrid.  Under the Royal Regulations of 1773, the uniform of the presidio soldier was a short  jacket of blue cloth with red cuffs and collar, blue breeches, blue cloth cap, a cartridge pouch, a bandolier with the name of the presidio on it, and a black neckerchief (besides the leather jacket.
A California Soldier's Wife, 1791: after Cardero; she wears an enagua, or transparent muslin skirt and pearls from Baja California; a tight-fitting silk blouse joins the skirt.  The shoes, zapatos de patillo, had high, wooden heels.  A silk rebozo or shawl was also worn.
