In order for your class to get the most out of their visit to El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park, the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation (SBTHP) has created a series of pre-visit materials that feature activities related to the Presidio.

In addition to the materials below, feel free to contact SBTHP for additional pre-visit programming which include a Presidio/Casa de la Guerra Introductory Video, the Los Soldado de Cuera Traveling Trunk and the La Cocina Traveling Trunk. Second Grade Pre-Visit Materials

SBTHP's tours and programs fulfill the following Second Grade California State Standards:

  • CA Standard 2.1: "Students differentiate between things that happened long ago and things that happened today."
  • CA Standard 2.1.2: "Compare and contrast their daily lives with those of their parents, grandparents and/or guardians."
  • CA Standard 2.4.1: "Describe food production and consumption long ago and today."
  • CA Standard 2.4.3: "Understand how limits on resources affect production and consumption (what to produce and what to consume)."

Pre-visit materials and worksheets:

  • Pre-Visit Newsletter - This pamphlet will give you the information you need about the Presidio, the Trust, the programs we offer and how they fit into your curriculum.
  • Comparison Chart - This worksheet helps your students compare life during the Colonial Era of Alta California with the modern lifestyle.
  • Vocabulary - Vocabulary your students should know before coming to the Presidio (same for all grades).
  • Vocabulary Worksheet - your students can practice using their Presidio vocabulary (same for 2nd and 3rd grades).
  • Supplement Vocabulary Worksheet - This worksheet is a bit easier than the one above, and it still reinforces Presidio vocabulary.

Third Grade Pre-Visit Materials

SBTHP's tours and programs fulfill the following Third Grade California State Standards:

  • CA Standard 3.3: "Students draw from historical and community resources to organize the sequence of local historical events and describe how each period of settlement left its mark on the land."
  • CA Standard 3.3.1: "Research the explorers who visited here, the newcomers who settled here, and the people who continue to come to this region..."
  • CA Standard 3.3.2: "Describe the economies established by settlers and their influence on the present-day economy..."
  • CA Standard 3.3.3: "Trace why their community was established, how individuals and families contributed to its founding and development, and how the community has changed over time..."

  • Third Grade Activity One - This worksheet helps your students compare life during the Colonial Era of Alta California with the modern lifestyle.
  • Third Grade Activity Two - This worksheet  helps your students learn about the cross-cultural exchange that occurred in the Colonial Era that helped to form our society.
  • Vocabulary - Vocabulary your students should know before coming to the Presidio (same for all grades).
  • Vocabulary Worksheet - your students can practice using their Presidio vocabulary (same for 2nd and 3rd grades).

Fourth Grade Pre-Visit Materials

SBTHP's tours and programs fulfill the following Fourth Grade California State Standards:

  • CA Standard 4.2: "Students describe the social, political, cultural and economic life and interactions among people of California from the pre-Columbian societies to the Spanish mission and Mexican rancho periods."
  • CA Standard 4.2.3: "Describe the Spanish exploration and colonization of California, including the relationships among soldiers, missionaries, and Indians..."
  • CA Standard 4.2.5: "Describe the daily lives of the people, native and nonnative, who occupied the presidios, missions, ranchos, and pueblos."
  • CA Standard 4.2.7: "Describe the effects of the Mexican War for Independence on Alta California..."
  • CA Standard 4.2.8: "Discuss the period of Mexican rule in California and its attributes..."

  • Vocabulary Worksheet 1, Worksheet 2 - your students can practice using their Presidio vocabulary (same for 4th, 5th and 6th grades).

Fifth and Sixth Grade Pre-Visit Materials

SBTHP's tours and programs fulfill the following Fifth and Sixth Grade California State Standards:

Fifth:

  • CA Standard 5.3: "Students describe the cooperation and conflict that existed among the American Indians and between the Indian nations and the new settlers."
  • CA Standard 5.4: "Students understand the political, religious, social, and economic institutions that evolved in the colonial era."

Sixth:

  • CA Standard 6.1.2: "Identify the locations of human communities that populated the major regions of the world and describe how humans adapted to a variety of environments."
