Weekend Museum Interpreter

Reports to: Office Manager, with support from Associate Director for Historical Resources
Classification: Regular, part-time (12 hours/week) weekends, holidays, and some evenings.

Scope of position: Weekend Interpreters are responsible for the visitor orientation and weekend operations of El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park and the Casa de la Guerra Historic House Museum. In addition to facilitating the daily operations of these historic sites and the associated museum shops, Weekend Interpreters create informal education experiences for visitors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Daily park and museum operations, including monitoring and maintenance of El Presidio State Historic Park and Casa de la Guerra during hours of operation, and opening and closing both sites. 
2. Provide welcome and orientation to all visitors.
3. Ticket sales for all Museum events and venues.
4. Gift shop and membership sales.
5. Accurate cash handling and reconciliation.
6. Conduct interpretive and educational programs, demonstrations, and guided tours.
7. Assist Historical Resources Staff in creating new interpretive activities.
8. Work special events and event rentals, as assigned.
9. Attend interpretive and all-staff meetings monthly.
10. SBTHP is a diverse organization with a small staff and many activities; all staff members must be versatile and cooperative in carrying out a variety of responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation required. Experience in customer service and cash handling required. Interest in informal education, history, and/or museum studies. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Desire to work with museum visitors. High level of initiative and ability to work without constant supervision. Solid organizational and problem-solving skills. Undergraduate or graduate student, or career changer with an emphasis in history, education, museum studies, public history, and/or interpretation preferred. Verbal and/or written fluency in Spanish desirable.

Start Date: Immediately
Usual Schedule: Saturdays and Sundays, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, plus holidays and some evenings.
Wage: $8.75/hour

Presidio Research Center Librarian


Reports to: Associate Director for Historical Resources
Classification: Regular, part time (16 hours/week), exempt

Scope of Position: Under the direction of the Associate Director for Historical Resources and the Research Center Committee, the librarian is responsible for overall management of the Santa Barbara Presidio Research Center, including collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, and public services. The Research Center is open by appointment only, and collections are non-circulating.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.  Administer all aspects of Research Center library and collections; create and update operational structure, policies, and procedures as needed;
2. Manage collections; facilitate collection development; order materials and supplies following collection development policy; work with donors, staff, and volunteers;
3. Organize, process and catalog monograph and serials collections utilizing MARC format;
4. Arrange and describe manuscript collections and institutional records using standardized archival practice;
5. Organize, process and catalog non-book collections (vertical files, maps, blueprints, photographs, visual images, microforms, sound recordings) using a variety of standardized cataloging formats and software applications;
6. Maintain preservation of all collections according to best practice;
7. Oversee periodic upgrades of cataloging software;
8. Provide reference services for staff and other users;
9. Work with other staff to insure appropriate collection-level descriptions and access points on SBTHP web site;
10. Supervise temporary personnel or volunteers who may be employed to catalog holdings or assist with collections processing;
11. Plan and facilitate meetings with Research Center Committee, including writing and distributing minutes;
12. Develop annual budget for Research Center operations;

QUALIFICATIONS

MLS from an ALA-accredited college or university. Experience in a special or museum library preferred. Experience with MARC cataloging; multiple formats desired. Experience in arranging and describing archival collections using DACS standard desired. Familiarity with and interest in borderlands studies, history of the American West or California history preferred. Requires strong oral, written, organizational and interpersonal skills, along with good computer skills. Facility in Spanish desirable.

Santa Inés Historic Mills Park Steward

Reports to: Executive Director
Classification: Regular, part time (20 hours/week), non-exempt

Scope of Position: Park Steward position serves as the onsite staff for the Historic Santa Ines Mills Park Project. Park Steward shall, in conjunction with appropriate SBTHP staff and committees, be responsible for the operation, maintenance, fund raising and community involvement for the park property. The position requires a minimum of 80 hours per month. At no time shall the position work more than 40 hours per week without prior authorization from the Executive Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

40% Maintenance and Operations: Maintain safe and sanitary park facilities.  Ensure the integrity of park boundaries and protect the prime historic, natural and agricultural resources within the state park. Develop an internal trail system.
30% Interpretation: In conjunction with appropriate SBTHP staff and committees, develop and conduct an interpretive program that will be available by reservations for special groups.  Install and maintain interpretive information for the public. Assist with park planning meetings and data gathering. Establish a docent/volunteer program for the park. Coordinate with La Purisima State Park staff and docents.
20% Community Relations: Under the direction of SBTHP Executive Director, develop partnerships with community stakeholder groups. Assist SBTHP staff in fund raising efforts and community outreach. Assist with the park planning effort by participating in public meetings and local outreach.
10% Administration:  Complete required reports and correspondence. 

The position may be required to work nights, weekends and holidays based on the public and operational needs. Hours will be flexible and dependent actual operational needs. SBTHP is a diverse organization with a small staff and many activities; all staff members must be versatile and cooperative in carrying out a variety of other responsibilities and duties as reasonably assigned by the Executive Director. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

AA degree required. Minimum two years experience in a comparable position required. BA degree in history, park administration, or closely related field desired. Background or interest in history desired. The position requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to speak to visiting and community groups. The job requires writing, organizational and good computer skills, including Word, Excel, and desktop publishing. Candidates must be available to work occasional evenings, weekends and varying shifts based upon public service needs. The job requires proven ability to act independently as needed while at the same time maintain the standards and directions set by the Executive Director and SBTHP Board of Directors.
