| 2nd Annual Tapas, Vino y Arte set for September 29
Tapas, Vino y Arte Join us for a celebration of the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation at its beautiful new Presidio Research Center with Tapas, Vino y Arte 2007. Featuring wine from some of the area’s finest wineries, tapas from flavorful local restaurants and art from some of Santa Barbara’s premiere artists. Celebrate with us as we unveil the new Santa Barbara Presidio Research Center at this festive Fall event in the historic Presidio District in downtown Santa Barbara. Featuring food from Fresco at the Beach, The (805) Deli, The Taj Cafe, Panino, Pascucci, Three Pickles and more...
In addition, the Trust will also unveil the new Santa Barbara Presidio Research Center. This historic 1920s Spanish-Colonial Revival building was home to the Santa Barbara School of the Arts from 1927 to 1938, as well as the Adult Education Program of the Santa Barbara School District until 1981. Using original blueprints the Trust has restored the building to its original appearance—including the restoration of original doors, windows and hardware, re-roofing of the building using many of the original tiles, and restoring the building to its original color. The Research Center will house all Trust curatorial and research collections, making many items readily available to the public for the first time. The collections document and reflect the peoples who have lived in the Santa Barbara Presidio neighborhood since the eighteenth century. Save the date in your calendar and be sure to look for your invitation in the mail! For more information about this event please call Jared Brach in the Development Department at (805) 966-1279 or visit www.sbthp.org |

Volunteer Spotlight on Rachel Samson
Rachel Samson began her internship in the curatorial department in September 2006. On her first day she demonstrated her willingness to jump right in and drove to Lompoc with curator Anne Petersen to help install the “Bridges of Santa Barbara County” exhibit. After learning basic collections management procedures, she worked with Petersen to accession all incoming objects and attack a project backlog that included rehousing a series of paintings. Rachel also served as curatorial assistant on the Trust’s “Forged in Iron” exhibit, and celebrated her last day at the Trust at the exhibit’s opening reception on May 30. Rachel completed her BA in English at UCSB and pursued an internship at the Trust to gain experience in the museum field. She is now enjoying a challenging marketing internship at Curatorial Assistance Traveling Exhibitions in Pasadena, and she is entertaining several great job opportunities in art galleries around the Los Angeles area. Everyone at the Trust wishes her the best of luck. For more information on volunteer or internship opportunities with the Trust CLICK HERE |

Keeping up with Los Soldados
The Anza Trail in San Juan Bautista was re-dedicated on Saturday, June 16, 2007. Central participants in the celebration were the Soldiers of the Royal Presidio of Santa Bárbara (Soldados del Reál Presidio de Santa Bárbara). Los Soldados brought the Anza Trail to life as they marched a mile from San Juan Bautista State Park to the Anza Trail head where they stood at attention throughout the dedication. As the ceremony came to an end members of Los Soldados lined up in formation and fired their rifles for the crowd of Spanish Colonial history enthusiasts. For more on the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail CLICK HERE Los Soldados is chartered to authentically portray the Spanish presidial soldier by means of reenactments of military drill, use of period costumes, role playing, and research into period history. Los Soldados re-enact the soldiers, civilians and their families as they lived at the Presidio of Santa Barbara in the period of time following the founding of the presidio in 1782. Uniforms, weapons, clothing, and equipment are as authentic as possible, utilizing antiques or reproductions. Los Soldados participate in numerous historic events every year.
