This year's event will take place throughout the Old City College Site located in the historic Presidio District in downtown Santa Barbara. The celebration will include the unveiling of the beautiful new Santa Barbara Presidio Research Center at 215 E. Canon Perdido Street. A festive fall décor will guide guests through the Plaza entrance at Canon Perdido Street where the pathway will open upon a series of food, wine and art stations placed throughout the grounds. Featuring live music, guests will have the opportunity to stroll, drink, eat, and bid on local art as they wander through the historic plaza. Stapen, Kim Snyder, Lynn Weber, Pedro De La Cruz, Chris Chapman, and Rich Untermann.
In addition, the Trust will also unveil the new Santa Barbara Presidio Research Center. This historic 1920s Spanish-Colonial Revival building was home to the Santa Barbara School of the Arts from 1927 to 1938, as well as the Adult Education Program of the Santa Barbara School District until 1981. Using original blueprints the Trust has restored the building to its original appearance—including the restoration of original doors, windows and hardware, re-roofing of the building using many of the original tiles, and restoring the building to its original color. The Research Center will house all Trust curatorial and research collections, making many items readily available to the public for the first time. The collections document and reflect the peoples who have lived in the Santa Barbara Presidio neighborhood since the eighteenth century. Save the date in your calendar and be sure to look for your invitation in the mail! More details to come. Gift Shop Highlight
Now in our museum shop is the wonderful book "Spirit of Chiapas: The Expressive Art of the Roof Cross Tradition" by Virginia Ann Guess. This fascinating study of the iron roof cross craft tradition in Chiapas, Mexico is the basis for the Trust's newest exhibit Forged in Iron: The Expressive Art of the Iron Roof Cross Tradition in Chiapas, Mexico, currently on display at the Casa de la Guerra Historic House Museum. The book, which includes detailed information, photos, and drawings of iron roof crosses, eloquently tells the story of the herreros (iron workers) in Chiapas and traces the evolution of the iron roof cross tradition from its inception as a local religious custom to its current renaissance as a decorative art. In a series of walking tours the author guides readers through the streets of the old barrios where the crosses still can be viewed. Through interviews with homeowners Guess tells the story of the people, history and culture of Chiapas. Available in hard copy and paperback at El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park and Casa de la Guerra Historic House Museum. For more information call Gift Shop Manager Joan Stewart at (805) 965-0093. Pick up your copy today! |
