"Vestuario, Armamento y Montura: Clothing, Arms and Mounts of the California Presidios, 1769-1822" by David Rickman
Thursday, May 18, 2006 - 7:00pm
El Presidio Chapel
FREE for Trust Members, $10 for Non-Members

The Trust's Historic Roots Lecture Series returns with “Vestuario, Armamento y Montura: Clothing, Arms, and Mounts of the California Presidios, 1769-1822.” Join us as guest speaker David Rickman, historian, interpreter, and illustrator, leads a dynamic discussion on his research and use of eyewitness descriptions and images to recreate authentic Early California period attire. Rickman has long questioned the accuracy of many accepted Early California costume depictions and is dedicated to presenting facts based on historic documentation and illustrations. Rickman has utilized his extensive research in early California costumes in consulting for several California State Parks, including Fort Ross, Monterey, Sutter’s Fort, and La Purisima Mission. He is currently working on a catalogue of Early California costumes for Los Angeles County Museums.

This is the first installment of the Trust’s new bimonthly Roots Lecture Series. Upcoming presentations include "Every Magic Mile: Railroads and the Renewal of Landscape" by Alfred Runte, Ph.D. on Thursday, June 29th, and "Reharvesting Ramona's Garden: Romance & Reality in California's Mythical Past” by David Hurst Thomas, Ph.D., Author & Curator of Anthropology, American Museum of Natural History, NY on Thursday, July 13th.

May Membership Special: "Members Only" Getty Villa Trip

After an eight year closure the new Getty Villa in Malibu is finally open and as part of the Trust's ongoing efforts to provide our members with distinctive membership incentives throughout the year, we are planning a "Members Only" trip to the villa on Sunday, July 2nd, 2006. The new Getty Villa in Malibu features the Getty's collection of Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities with "a design that's culturally respectful as it is ground-breaking," Matthew Jaffe, Sunset Magazine. The Trust itself has an interesting connection with the villa. Norman Neuerburg, original designer of the Getty Villa (1974), also designed and painted much of the reconstructed chapel interior of El Presidio de Santa Barbara. The trip will include transportation courtesy of the Santa Barbara Air Bus, lunch, and a free audio tour once we reach the Villa. You can reserve your seat today by sending a check for $35 dollars to the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation or calling 805.965.0093 / emailing jared@sbthp.org. This great opportunity is available to Trust members on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited so call or email today.

Northwest Corner Reconstruction Update: As June approaches, reconstruction efforts on the Northwest Corner of El Presidio de Santa Barbara nears completion and the final stages are set for the unveiling of these two new rooms at Tapas, Vino y Arte on June 10, 2006. Most recently the roof has been added and covered with reed and adobe mud for insulation. The outside of the building has been coated with mud plaster in preparation for a coat of whitewash to protect the structure. Red roof tiles await their placement atop the structure, as the dirt floors are prepared to be laid and packed. Be sure to stop by and catch a glimpse of the construction efforts while you still have a chance. The unveiling of the newly reconstructed rooms is scheduled to coincide with the Trust's 2nd Annual Fundraising Event: Tapas, Vino y Arte (see above) on Saturday, June 10. We hope to see you there!

One of the exhibit’s fiesta-themed paintings will be this year’s Old Spanish Days Fiesta poster. Also included in the exhibit is a historical collection owned by Ron Gillio. The collection includes a beautiful painting of a Californio family picnic by early-20th-century artist Alexander Harmer, who lived in an adobe just across the plaza from Casa de la Guerra. The exhibit will close at the end of June, so please stop by and see it soon!

Los Cuentos de los Voluntarios: On April 20th and 21st (the official anniversary of the founding of El Presidio de Santa Barbara on April 21st, 1782) a cross-section of third grade students from across Santa Barbara County were given an opportunity to live the life of early Presidio settlers. After having only heard or read about cooking and weaving, adobe and pottery making, blacksmithing and soldiers' duties, these students finally had an opportunity to take part in these activities. For two days, a lot of hard work and planning by the staff and volunteers enabled these young people to fill the Presidio with their excited voices as they learned while having a lot of fun.
