You Can Help!

SBTHP urges attendance at critical development appeal hearing at the Santa Barbara City Council Meeting on September 30, 2008.

The Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation has filed an appeal of the City Planning Commission's approval of a building project that proposes to demolish a small building, remove many trees, excavate the site, and construct a new mixed use commercial and residential condominium building at 800 Santa Barbara Street, at the NE corner of Santa Barbara and De la Guerra Streets. The appeal seeks City Council denial of the requested Tentative Subdivision Map and Development Plan.

When: September 30, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Where: Santa Barbara City Council Chambers (735 Anacapa Street, Santa Barbara, CA)

Key Points: The project does not conform to City policies. The size, bulk and scale of the proposed project are not compatible with existing surrounding developments and its setting within the El Pueblo Viejo Landmark District. The minimal setbacks of the two-story elements and the three-story element completely change the character of the existing streetscape. Public views would be adversely affected. Learn More>>

¡Viva La Fiesta! by Jeff Krisko

This past Fiesta (July 30 - August 3, 2008) the SBTHP returned to Old Spanish Days historic parade – El Desfile Histórico – with a “Founders’ Float,” recreating the April 21, 1782 founding of the Presidio. Staff members Eduardo Garcia, Luis Diosdado, Mike Imwalle and Jared Brach built the palisade for the float and brought out the parade cannon and papier-mâché horse—after volunteer Tahlia Serrano and staff member Jesse Armendariz gave it a fresh layer of paint. In addition to riding on the float, SBTHP volunteer Edith Ogella donated extensive time to constructing the required wooden barrier. A crew headed by Karen Anderson, including staff members Jerry Jackman, Anne Petersen and Christine Stokes, applied the requisite greenery and flowers with the help of volunteers Tara Stoker, Meg and Savanna Fox, and Russell C. and Diane Ruiz.

On the day of El Desfile Histórico, Board Member Dr. Bob Hoover donned a Franciscan robe and took up a staff to portray the founding priest, Father Junípero Serra. The annual Presidio Archaeology Field School run by Dr. Hoover provided the float with many costumed volunteers to walk alongside. Four of our faithful costumed interpreters, Russell and Diane Ruiz, Miguel Aberle and Ben Valenzuela were joined on the float by Jesse Armendariz, Edith and Ray Ogella, Elizabeth Stewart, Paul Coyne and myself, portraying the Presidio inhabitants present at the dedication ceremony. Owing to the fact that the Presidio is now a State Historic Park, Channel Coast district staff, led by Channel Coast District Superintendent Rich Rozzelle and Interpretive Specialist Wes Chapin escorted the float down Cabrillo Boulevard and up State Street, handing out junior ranger stickers on their way.

The SBTHP would like to thank all the volunteers who donated their time to constructing and riding on the float. Their hard work certainly paid off as the SBTHP’s entry won the Mayor’s Prize at this year’s parade. Congratulations!

SOS - Save Our State Parks

The Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation joins thousands of individuals and organizations throughout the State in supporting the California State Parks Access program.

After months of fighting just to keep the doors to our state parks open, Californians have an opportunity to help push for a solution to the funding crisis for state parks. On May 28, Assemblymember John Laird (D-Santa Cruz) announced the new State Park Access Pass program. The proposed program would generate more than $280 million a year for state parks, through a $10 surcharge on annual vehicle registrations. In return for that annual support for the state park system, Californians will receive free day-use access to California's state parks.

This is a solution that is long overdue. California's state park system tells of the history and culture of our state, protects unique natural resources that are irreplaceable, provides unparalleled access to recreational opportunities, and represents a promise for the future. Unfortunately, lack of adequate funding has meant that those promises haven't been kept.

Paying $10 annually for virtually unlimited access to the state park system is a bargain for Californians. And in addition to getting personal benefits, Californians will be making an important and necessary investment in the health of the system – for now and forever.

For more information on this initiative or to send a message to your state legislators to let them know you support the State Park Access Pass visit http://www.calparks.org/park-access/ or www.savestateparks.org.
