Adobe Brick Making at El Presidio de Santa Barbara SHP
On October 14 SBTHP board member Tim Aguilar began setting up to make adobe bricks for the next phase of the Northwest Corner Reconstruction Project at El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park - the reconstruction of the original 18th century defense wall. We need approximately 15,000 bricks to complete the wall from Canon Perdido Street to the corner in the rear courtyard of the Presidio. Tim and his crew, led by Francisco "Frankie" Garcia, Pedro Pena Ramirez, Oscar Soto, Carlos Lopez, and Isidro Pacheco Ruiz began making bricks on October 15. Remarkably, as of October 30 the crew had produced 2,560 - 11 x 22 x 4" adobe bricks for the outer defense wall. The bricks will be dried, stacked on pallets and moved by Thanksgiving. Now If we could only do that five more times we'd be done!
Earlier this year the SBTHP launched the Buy-A-Brick Campaign to help rebuild Santa Barbara's birthplace, a brick at a time! Learn more>> |
Santa Inés Mission Mills One Step Closer to Becoming a State Park - SBTHP Announces Partnership with National Park Service
On September 24, 2008, escrow closed and the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation's Santa Inés Mission Mills property was officially conveyed to the State of California as a first step towards creating a new State Historic Park. Adding to this exciting news, the SBTHP is pleased to announce that our application for Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance from the National Park Service (NPS) in connection with the future development of the Mills as a State Park was accepted. We hope to begin working with NPS later this month to start planning public outreach and partnership building for the Santa Inés Mission Mills State Historic Park. Together we will work to produce promotional materials and concept plans to introduce this important project to the community, outline possible development ideas, and urge public participation in future meetings and Park planning efforts. The SBTHP is proud to add the National Park Service to our list of partners. Stay tuned for more information on the Santa Inés Mission Mills! Learn more about the history of the Mills>> |

"My Friends Call Me Miss Chase: The Story of a Woman and a City" Now Available!
In early August a very enthusiastic audience viewed the premier of the first known film about the life of Pearl Chase. The SBTHP is happy to announce that we now have DVD copies of this fascinating thirty minute documentary on the life and times of this remarkable civic activist available in our gift shop.
Miss Chase was an exceptional woman, a volunteer whose life-long dedication to the city of Santa Barbara is a lasting legacy and an inspiration to all. Her life and work illuminate an important chapter in Santa Barbara's history. Over a period of several years the SBTHP conducted oral interviews with individuals who knew and worked with Miss Chase. These interviews, now in the Santa Barbara Presidio Research Center, form the core of the video produced by LifeStory Productions, Inc.
Price: $12.95 (SBTHP Members receive a 10% gift shop discount)
Stop by the Presidio Gift Shop and pick-up your copy today or call (805) 965-0093 for more information. |
Historic Olive Tree Dedication
On August 23, 2008 a plaque honoring a group of historic olive trees planted at the new olive groves between the Santa Inés Mission Mills and Old Mission Santa Inés was presented to SBTHP archaeologist, Michael Imwalle and SBTHP executive director, Jerry Jackman, and Sheila Benedict and Father Michael Mahoney of Old Mission Santa Inés by the Mission Olive Preservation, Research, and Education Project (MOPREP). The group (MOPREP), based in Sacramento, also presented similar plaques at Mission Santa Barbara and El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park where heritage trees are also planted.
The mission olive is believed to have originated in Spain but is no longer found in the region, making the Mission Olive a variety unique to the Americas. During the mission period in California olive oil was used for cooking, lamp oil, medicinal use, and in religious ceremonies. The trees planted by MOPREP in the Santa Barbara area come from historic stock in Paso Robles. The SBTHP looks forward to telling you much more about our olive tree program at Santa Inés Mission Mills in the future. |
