Una Noche de Las Posadas
Celebrate a Santa Barbara Holiday Tradition

Saturday, December 16, 2006 at 6:00 p.m.
El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park - 123 E. Canon Perdido Street &
Casa de la Guerra - 15 E. De la Guerra Street
FREE Community Event

Las Posadas (The Inns) is the time-honored reenactment of Joseph and Mary's search for lodging in Bethlehem as it was once celebrated in early California. In it, groups of children and adults go from house to house singing a traditional song requesting lodging (posada). At each house, the owner responds with a refusal (also in song), until they reach the designated site where the owner recognizes Mary and Joseph and allows them to enter. Many Latin American countries continue to celebrate this holiday in the traditional manner. In many places, the posada has evolved into a religious and social celebration, paying a festive homage to the journey. The public is invited to participate in this rich cultural tradition, experiencing first-hand the way in which Santa Barbara’s Spanish and Mexican residents celebrated Christmas in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The festive evening will begin with a short mass by Father Virgil Cordano of Mission Santa Barbara, and the singing of traditional Spanish songs in the historic Presidio chapel led by El Coro del Real Presidio de Santa Barbara. Attendees then have a chance to join the choir in a procession led by a young Joseph and Mary and their burro, Wilson, strolling and singing over to State Street, through the Paseo Nuevo shopping mall and into De la Guerra Plaza. The procession will end at Casa de la Guerra as Joseph and Mary finally find lodging, and guests enjoy more singing, traditional refreshments, hot cocoa, and a piñata for the children. All are encouraged to join us in this beautiful holiday event!

Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation & California State Parks Agree to a Twenty Year Operating Agreement – New contract concludes a busy year for the Trust and State Parks, highlighting their unique and successful partnership

The Trust is pleased to announce that it has entered into a new twenty year agreement with the State of California Department of Parks and Recreation for operation of El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park. The new agreement, recently signed by State Parks Director Ruth Coleman and Trust Board President Barbara Lindemann, officially began on December 1, 2006 and will continue until December 2026. The Trust is currently one of only two California State Park sites that enjoy this rare partnership. This recent agreement is the lengthiest in the history of the Trust and serves to strengthen and celebrate the longstanding relationship between the Trust and California State Parks.

Over the past forty years the Trust has enjoyed a unique partnership with California State Parks. Preservation activist and leading Santa Barbara citizen Pearl Chase, founder of the Trust in 1963, recognized early on that harnessing the power of State Parks would provide the Trust and the people of California with mutually reciprocal benefits for the reconstruction and operation of El Presidio de Santa Barbara. In 1966 El Presidio became a State Historic Park, and a series of multi-year agreements between the two parties led to the passage in 1988 by the California State Legislature of formal enabling legislation authorizing the Department to enter into an operating agreement with the Trust.

During this time period, in addition to staffing and maintaining the Park, the Trust has raised funds for and carried out numerous projects with the help of California State Parks – including major archaeological excavations, historical reconstructions, museum installations and ongoing education programs for the benefit of the citizens of Santa Barbara and thousands of Park visitors from around the world each year. Together, they have developed a general plan for El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park that was approved by the City of Santa Barbara, the State of California and the Trust.

With a new twenty year operating agreement in place, the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation and California State Parks look forward to many more years of symbiotic association to help provide for the inspiration and education of the people of Santa Barbara, California, and visitors throughout the country and around the world.
