Resource Center Construction Underway Reconstruction on the new Presidio Resource Center is now well underway. Through the sale of a property to the State of California, the Trust was recently able to match the $323,000 grant awarded by the California Cultural and Historical Endowment (CCHE) in early 2006. With funding for the project completed, Channel Coast Corporation has begun work once again and the project is tentatively scheduled to be completed in Spring of 2007. The new Resource Center will house all Trust curatorial and research collections and make them available to the public for the first time. The collections document and reflect the peoples who have lived in the Santa Barbara Presidio neighborhood since the eighteenth century. These artifacts, manuscripts, maps, photographs, and other materials are used to support El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park's exhibits and educational programs, as well as to provide the public with unique resources for local history. Funding began in 1999 for planning, and a capital campaign was launched in 2003. Thanks to the donations of hundreds of individuals, private foundations, City of Santa Barbara Redevelopment Agency, California State Parks, and the people of the State of California, this valuable community resource will soon be complete. |

| 2007 Annual Meeting and Awards Presentation
Executive Director Jarrell C. Jackman discussed a few of the Trust's major projects for 2007, including the opening of the new Resource Center, the impending purchase of Jimmy's Oriental Gardens, commencement of the next phase of Presidio Northwest Corner reconstruction, beginning an exhibit and museum Master Plan for Trust and State Park sites, the California League of Park Associations (CALPA) conference in October, and opening the Santa Inés Mills State Historic Park. During the community awards presentation Dr. Jackman presented the George and Vie Obern Preservation Stewardship Award to the Goleta Valley Historical Society (for their preservation and reconstruction work at Stow House and Rancho La Patera) and Derek Westen (for his preservation and refurbishment of the Westen/Starbucks building in downtown Santa Barbara). Richard A. Rojas, Superintendent, Channel Coast District, California State Parks, was honored as a Life Honorary Member of the Trust (see photo of Rojas with his family). Featured speaker Elizabeth Goldstein, President, California State Parks Foundation, gave a moving presentation on Park advocacy and the tremendous value of our State Park system. Following the ceremony guests moved to the newly reconstructed Presidio Northwest Corner rooms where they enjoyed light refreshments. A sense of accomplishment and excitement filled the afternoon as the Trust said goodbye to an eventful 2006 and turned towards an even busier 2007. |
“A Taste of the Past" Join the Trust for “A Taste of the Past: A Lecture and Tasting Series.” Explore history through your taste buds in this 3-part series. These tempting presentations feature a selection of culinary experts who will examine the stories behind some of California’s most popular foods and drinks: chocolate and chiles, wine and cheese, and tequila. Each presentation concludes with a delicious tasting.
Miriam Hospodar returns to the Trust to talk about chocolate and chiles, both individually and in partnership. After a lecture about the history of each food, there will be a tantalizing tasting of chocolate confections - just a few days before Valentine’s Day!
Join our two guest speakers, Deborah Hall, owner of Gypsy Canyon winery that dates back to the early 1800s, and horticulturist Jerry Sortomme, who will talk about grapes, vineyards, and wine making in early California and today. Following the lecture, sip history and sample Gypsy Canyon’s Angelica, paired with a delectable cheese. As Sortomme declared, “This will be a cerebral and sensory adventure!”
The Trust is offering a “taste of the past” with three types of tequila presented by El Cazador del Mar, a local restaurant known as a prime tequila casa. First, Alex Castillo will talk about the history of this agave spirit, and then provide taste temptations by Don Julio, one of the oldest tequileras, together with tequila-inspired appetizers. |
